Joel Osteen says you can have “Your Best Life Now” and “Become a Better You”

In essence, Joel Osteen preaches a new age occult doctrine of the law of attraction. It is a satanic lie clothed in Christian terminology. Joel teaches that we create our own destiny, health, wealth, reality, prosperity by attracting it to us through the power of our minds and by the words we speak.  This is not biblical and must be regarded as a doctrine of demons.

It is appropriate to begin this article with some important scriptures that relate to the false teachings of Joel Osteen:

1 Tim 4:1-2  The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

1 Tim 6: 2 These are the things you are to teach and insist on. 3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, 4 they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions 5 and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

1 Tim 6:17-21 17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. 20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith.

Joel Osteen teaches a brand of Christianity that inverts the core teachings of the bible. In doing so, he identifies himself as an enemy of the cross (Phil 3:18,19). He unashamedly promotes materialism and the love of the things of this world, leading his congregation into idolatry.

joel-osteen-your-best-life-nowThe Bible teaches us that the worship of the good things of this life is idolatry. Idolatry is by far the most often discussed problem in the Bible. To define idolatry let’s refer to Romans 1:25: “For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and they worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator God who is forever praised. Amen.” That is the biblical definition of idolatry. Worship is living for the glory of God our Creator. Idolatry is living for the glory of creation or to glorify ourselves. Anything can become an idol in our lives. We are created to worship God and to enjoy and be stewards of God’s creation.

By definition, idolatry is what happens when the inversion of true worship occurs, when we worship something other than God who alone is worthy to be worshipped. Something that is created is essentially deified or glorified. It is put in the pre-eminent position in our lives and displaces the worship of God. It then becomes the source of our identity and our joy, the object of  our affection. It is literally the object of our worship. And here is the tricky part. Most of the time we do not worship things that are bad; we worship things that are good. What happens is we take good things, we make them into god things, and in so doing they become bad things. In addition, most people are blind to their own idolatry. I don’t think that they are victims. I believe that if they have the Holy Spirit they have essentially closed their eyes. They have chosen not to see their idolatry. Martin Luther goes so far as to say that  all issues come down to the issue of worship, that in the first commandment we are told that there is one God and we are to worship that God alone. Martin Luther rightly says that if you obey the first two commandments you will not violate the rest. You won’t commit adultery if there’s one God and you’re worshipping Him alone. You won’t steal if there’s one God and you worship Him alone. You won’t be worshipping sex or money. You won’t need to be lying because you won’t be worshipping your reputation, and lying is usually to make us look better than we truly are. Martin Luther’s keen insights still ring profoundly true.

Joel Osteen falsely teaches that we attract earthly health, wealth and material success with the power of our mind and the words that we speak. This teaching is a well established occult teaching called the “law of attraction”. It is taught in the film The Secret; it is taught by all self-help and personal development (non-Christian) books; it is taught in the new age and the occult. Joel Osteen teaches what is commonly called word of faith or word faith doctrine. It is more commonly known as the “prosperity gospel”. The fact that Osteen teaches the false prosperity gospel which is synonymous with pure occultism, is in itself evidence that the gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the bible have been forsaken. Find out more about the origins and false teachings about the word of faith doctrine and movement.

Once we abandon the true gospel of Jesus Christ as taught in the bible, we are left with the lie that we are gods, that we are in control of our destiny, that we are free to live as we please, to chase our own dreams and desires, to follow the desire of our hearts and thoughts. This brings us into agreement with the teachings of the Satanist Alastair Crowley who developed the satanic maxim, “do as thou wilt is the whole of the law”. Satanism is defined by the belief  that man is free to do whatever he or she pleases without the need for God or His higher moral laws for humanity.

joel-osteen-become-a-better-youGod does not exists for our benefit. The Bible clearly teaches that we are called to worship God, live according to his moral laws, to escape God’s judgement on sin, and to live a holy life. God is not our personal talisman or “genie in a bottle” whom we can summon on demand to give us every carnal desire of our sinful hearts and minds. It is because humanity is tainted by sin that  we fall short of the glory of God and His righteous requirements for living a holy life. We are not free to live a carefree life according to our own set of rules. Those who do so live in a state of rebellion towards God and rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft (1 Samuel 15:23).

It is not the power of God or Jesus Christ that is referred to. It is new age philosophy that teaches the spiritual evolution of humanity and that man can become a God; that we all have an inner power that we can unleash to become a god. What is taught in The Secret is often referred to as “the law of attraction”.

Now watch Joel Osteen “teaching” alongside Oprah Winfrey. Oprah used to be a Christian but has abandoned the Christian faith and now teaches pure New Age doctrine. In this video he is teaching an occult technique called “affirmations” which is a very well established occult mind-control technique. It is therefore no surprise that Oprah is in love with Joel Osteen’s new book entitled “I Am” because the New Age teaches that we can become God’s.  Christians are probably flocking to the Christian bookshop to purchase the latest heresy by Osteen. By writing a book entitled “I Am” and encouraging Christians to “affirm” this verbally, he is fact teaching that we are God’s.

If you do not believe me, please take a few minutes to check the hidden teaching of the Word of Faith (Prosperity Gospel) movement. It is rooted in metaphysics (mind science) and is designed by Satan to destroy the spiritual life of any Christian. This links to the heretical doctrines of the prosperity gospel that teach that we can create prosperity through the words we speak. Words have power to give us exactly what we wish. It is no surprise that what the proponents of this heresy want is not more of God but more of this world’s wealth – money. The dirty little secret hidden in the prosperity gospel is that we are gods! See Word of Faith Heresy Exposed.

Here are a few scriptures that clearly oppose the false teachings of Joel Osteen:

1 John 2:15-16 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.

Philippians 3:18-19 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.

Luke 9:23 23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

1 John 2:4-6 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.

1 Peter 1:3-7 3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.

1 Peter 1:13-14 13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

James 1:2-4 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

James 4:4 4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.

James 4:13-16 13 Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” 14 Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. 15 Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” 16 As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil.

2 Peter 2:2-3 2 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

2 Peter 2:13-15 13 They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, revelling in their pleasures while they feast with you. 14 With eyes full of adultery, they never stop sinning; they seduce the unstable; they are experts in greed—an accursed brood! 15 They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness.

2 Peter 2: 17-22 17 These people are springs without water and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. 18 For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. 19 They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
