What is Salvation in Christianity?

salvation through christ

Jesus is the Light of the world and the Bread of Life

In the Bible we read (John 3:16-21): “For God so loved the world so much that he gave his only Son (Jesus) so that anyone who believes in him (Jesus) will not  perish but have eternal life. 17. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it. 18. There is no eternal doom awaiting those who trust in him to save them. But those who who don’t trust him have already been tried and condemned for not believing in the only Son of God. 19. Their sentence is based on this fact: that the Light from heaven came into the world, but they loved the darkness more than the Light, for their deeds are evil. 20. They hated the heavenly Light for fear their sins will be exposed and they would be punished. 21. But those doing right come gladly to the Light to let everyone see that they are doing what God wants them to.”

In verse 36 we read: “And all who trust him – God’s Son – to save them, have eternal life; those who don’t believe and obey him shall never see heaven, but the wrath of God remains upon them.”

In John 6: 26-29 we read: ‘Jesus replied, “The truth of the matter is that you want to be with me because I fed you. not because you believe in me. But you shouldn’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. No, spend your energy seeking the eternal life that I the Messiah, can give you. For God the Father has sent me for this very purpose.” …. Jesus told them, “This is the will of God, that you believe in the one he has sent.”

In John 6:47 – 51 we read: “How earnestly I tell you this – anyone who believes in me already has eternal life! Yes, I am the Bread of Life! … I am that Living Bread that came down out of heaven. Anyone eating this Bread shall live forever; this Bread is my flesh given to redeem humanity.”

In John 6:57-58 we read: “I (Jesus) live by the power of the living Father who sent me, and in the same way those who partake of me shall live because if me! I am the true Bread from heaven; and anyone who eats of this Bread shall live forever, and not die as your fathers did …”

We are slaves to sin

John 8:34-36  ‘Jesus replied. “You are slaves of sin, every one of you. And slaves don’t have rights, but the Son (of God) has every right there is! So if the Son sets you free, you will indeed be free .”

All People Are Sinners

1 John 1:5-10 ” … God is Light and in him is no darkness at all. So if we say we are his friends, but go on living in spiritual darkness and sin, we are lying. But if we are living in the light of God’s presence, just as Christ does, then we have wonderful fellowship and joy with each other, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from every sin. If we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves, and refusing to accept the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he can be depended on to forgive us and cleanse us from every wrong.  … If we claim we have not sinned, we are lying and calling God a liar, for he says we have sinned.”

Romans 5:12 “When Adam sinned, sin entered the entire human race. His sin spread death throughout all the world, so everything began to grow old and die, for all have sinned.”

Romans 3:10-12 “No one is good – no one in all the world is innocent. No one has ever really followed God’s paths, or even truly wanted to. Every one has turned away; all have gone wrong. No one has kept on doing what is right, not one.”

Forgiveness of sin through Christ

Christ took our punishment

Romans 3:21-25 “But now God has shown us a different way to heaven – not by ‘being good enough’, and trying to keep his laws, but by a new way … Now God says he will accept and acquit us – declare us “not guilty” – if we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, by coming to Christ, no matter who we are or what we have been like. Yes, all have sinned and fall short of God’s glorious ideal, yet now God declares us “not guilty” of offending him if we trust in Jesus Christ, who in his kindness freely takes away our sins. For God sent Christ Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to end all God’s anger against us. He used Christ’s blood and our faith as the means of saving us from his wrath.”

Romans 3:27-28 “Then what can we boats about doing to earn our salvation? Nothing at all. Why? Because our acquittal is not based on our good deeds; it is based on what Christ has done and our faith in him. So it is that we are saved by faith in Christ and not by the good things we do.”

Romans 5:15-19 “For this one man Adam brought death to many through his sin. But this one man Jesus Christ, brought forgiveness to many through God’s mercy. Adam’s sin brought the penalty of death to many, while Christ freely takes away many sins and gives glorious life instead. The sin of this one man Adam caused death to be king over all, but all who will take God’s gift of forgiveness and acquittal are kings of life because of this one man Jesus Christ. Yes, Adam’s sin brought punishment to all, but Christ’s righteousness makes men right with God, so that they can live. Adam caused many to be sinners because he disobeyed God, and Christ caused many to be made acceptable to God because he obeyed.”

Faith brings joy

Romans 5:1 “So now, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith in his promises, we can have real peace with him because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.”

Jesus speaks about the true sons and daughters of God

John 8:31-32 ‘Jesus said to them, “You are truly my disciples if you live as I tell you to, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8: 43-47 “Why can’t you understand what I am saying? It is because you are prevented from doing so! For you are the children of your father the devil and you love to do  the evil things he does. He was a murdered from the beginning and a hater of truth – there is not an iota of truth in him. When he lies, it is perfectly normal, for he is the father of liars. And so when I tell you the truth, you just naturally don’t believe it! …. Anyone whose Father is God listens gladly to the words of God. Since you don’t, it proves you aren’t his children.”

Jesus teaches about spiritual blindness

John 9:39 ‘Then Jesus told him, “I have come into the world to give sight to those who are spiritually blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.”

Jesus is the Good Shepherd

John 10: 7-10 “I am the Gate for the sheep …. All others who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. Yes, I am the Gate. Those who come in by the way of the Gate will be saved and will go in and out and find green pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal, kill and destroy. My purpose is to give life in all it’s fullness.”

Romans 5:6-11 “When we were utterly helpless with no way of escape, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners, who had no use for him. Even if we were good, we really wouldn’t expect anyone to dies for us, though of course, that might be barely possible. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while were still sinners. And since by his blood he did all this for us as sinners, how much more will he do for us now that he has declared us not guilty? Now he will save us from all of God’s wrath to come. And since, when we were his enemies, we were brought back to God by the death of his Son, what blessings he must have for us now that we are his friends, and he is living within us! Now we rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God – all because of what our Lord Jesus Christ has done in dying for our sins – making us friends of God.”
